Vintage Cars

The aristocracy of India was among the early users of motor cars, soon after these beauties starting making an appearance on these shores. Sometimes custom built or furnished to suit the extravagant tastes of the rulers. More often than not, they carried the insignia and Coat of Arms off the royal house they belonged to.

In the present day, several of these cars are now restored and make a rare public appearance at the annual Vintage Car Rally, held in Jaipur each January. For car enthusiasts among the local populace as well as tourists, this event is a big draw. Keenly contested, the event has a big turnout with some of the cars even belonging to the early 1900s. This event is also a big draw on the social calendar of the region. Most of these cars are in peak running condition. Some of the rare cars that have participated in this rally in the recent past include Some of the rare cars participating include Cadillac (1956), Dodge (1933), Chrysler Windsor (1947), Mercedes (1939), Studebaker, Jaguar, Daimler (1959) and Rolls Royce.

Even several royal houses, luxury hotels and garages in Rajasthan have a collection of vintage cars. Cars like Ford, Dodge and Erskine, well maintained and with original parts, are available for touring and also for royal weddings, to ferry the bride, groom and the wedding party.

In Udaipur, The original Palace Garage, near The City Palace Complex, has a Vintage and Classic Car Collection in that was reconstituted in February 2000. This new collection showcases old limousines and rare automobiles belonging to the Royal House of Mewar. The cars are all in perfect running condition. An original Burmah Shell petrol pump is also located on the premises, adding to the charm and authenticity of the Collection.
