Jhunjhunu
Situated in the Shekhawati region known for its Mansions with Frescoes, Jhunjhunu is an ancient town. Its verdant green valley and natural beauty as well as several monuments of importance attract tourists to Jhunjhunu. Unlike most other places of royal Rajasthan that were founded by Rajput or Jat rulers, Jhunjhunu was founded by Kamkhani Nawabs.
A quiet place with an unhurried pace of life, Jhunjhunu is an undiscovered gem. It is believed that the town exists at least since the year 1045 AD when the Chauhans took over it. The merchants in the middle ages were very prosperous and spent their money in making havelis (mansions) with beautifully painted frescoes. Modi Haveli is one such building. Apart from the havelis, there are also a number of forts and palaces for leisurely sightseeing in Jhunjhunu. These include the Badalgarh Fort or the Fort of the Clouds, Jorawargarh Fort, Akhegarh Fort and Khetri Mahal. There are also cenotaphs and step wells made in the Rajput architectural style.
Together with the other towns of Shekhawati region like Mandawa and Dundlod, Jhunjhunu makes for an excellent leisure holiday. Jhunjhunu houses the mausoleum of Qamar-ud-Din Shah, patron saint of the Kamkhani sect, as well as a 10th-century Jain temple.
Located 245 km from Delhi and 180 km from Jaipur, Jhunjhunu is a hot and dry place like most parts of Rajasthan. The best time to visit is during winter and spring months, from October to March. The closest airport is in Jaipur. Jhunjhunu is also well connected with Jaipur and other major cities by rail and road.
Traditional jewellery, colorful bangles, tie and dye saris and traditional shoes can be shopped for in Jhunjhunu. It is also famous for made -as-old furniture and mewari miniature paintings. Shopping in Jhunjhunu is a pleasure activity that involves leisure and bargaining.
