Forts and Palaces

More than anything else, the forts and palaces define the royal heritage of Rajasthan. Built on hills and in the midst of lakes; surrounded by moats or huge walls; with lavish rooms decorated with the best ranging from paintings, silks and precious stones to crystal; the forts and palaces of Rajasthan defy imagination.

Most of these forts and palaces were built by the Rajput rulers of Rajasthan, while some were also built by Nawabs. The forts and palaces exist from 10th century onwards. The forts were bastions to save the town from ransacking invaders, while the palaces were personal residences for themselves and their women, pleasure palaces or hunting lodges of the rulers. It is no wonder then, that the palaces and forts are immersed in history and nostalgia, with tales of valour, intrigue and romance attached with each one of them.

Typically made with locally available stones and materials, the interior decor of these forts and palaces are a study in the arts and crafts of the region. Filigree carvings, miniature paintings, beautiful sculpture, lattice balconies, crenelated walls all find a place.

A journey to the forts and palaces of Rajasthan is a journey into time itself.
