Elephant Festival

In 2008, the Elephant Festival will be held on 21st March. An annual event in Jaipur, it is held at the same time as the festival of colours, Holi. Beautifully caparisoned elephants are the centre of attraction.

Elephant is a gentle animal and has always had a close relationship with human beings. In royal Rajasthan, elephants have been the vehicle of choice for the royals and also have been used in battles.

During the Elephant Festival, a procession of elephants as well as camels and horses is taken out. Elephant races, elephant-polo matches as well as a tug of war between elephants and men, are just some of the attractions. Curiously, most of the elephants that are made to participate in this festival are the female of the species. They are decorated with jewellery and flowers.

Dances by Rajasthani folk performers are also a part of the elephant festival. The elephant festival is a completely unique and fun event.
