Desert National Park

Desert National Park houses the ecosystem of the Great Indian Desert Thar and is also home to the famous endangered species, the Great Indian Bustard. Nearly twenty percent area of the park is covered by desert. This is also among the largest sanctuaries in India.

Craggy rocks and compact salt lake bottoms, inter medial areas and fixed dunes form the topography here. Black Buck, an animal revered by the Bishnoi community is found here, as are animals like desert fox, Bengal fox, and wolf and desert cat. Numerous birds like sand grouse, partridges, bee-eaters, larks and shrikes as well as Demoiselle crane and Hobard either find a home here or migrate to this place, making it a bird watcher's paradise.

An entry fee of Rs. 100 per person as well as for jeep and car fee and for Rs. 200 coach is levied. There are two forest lodges and two restaurants within the park, besides ample heritage hotels and guest houses in the town of Jaisalmer. Wood Fossil Park at Akal, with fossils from the Jurassic period, is another nearby attraction.
