Kite Festival Jaipur

On 14th January, the day of Makar Sankranti, i.e. when the sun goes into the northern hemisphere, kite flying is the only activity in most parts of the country! Rooftops are crowded and colourful kites populate the blue sky that marks the changing season (from winter to spring).

A day of fun and revelry, kite flying attracts people of all ages from a child of 6 to an adult of 60. Jaipur is a major centre for kite attracts and attracts people from all over. The competitions held here as a part of the Kite Festival has participants from other countries as well.

It is a three-day festival that starts with an inauguration function at the Polo Ground. The cultural aspect of the festival involves a large scale extravaganza, kites released in the sky by air force helicopters and balloons released in large number by school children.

The enthusiastic participants bring kites in all sorts of fancy shapes, sizes and colours. Kites that look like butterflies, wasps, graceful mythical birds and anything else that catches the kite maker’s imagination, soar in the sky and cast their magic upon spellbound watchers.

There is a Fighter Kite Competition as well as Display Flying Competition with trophies to be won in each. This is simply a fun festival, without any myth or legend attached to it.
